How to Measure Your Dog for a Harness in 3 Simple Steps.
Share
Shopping for new dog gear is always exciting, but getting the right size can feel a bit tricky. Just like us, dogs come in all shapes and sizes—a medium-sized French Bulldog has a very different build than a medium-sized Border Collie!
A perfectly fitting harness keeps your dog safe, prevents them from slipping out, and stops any uncomfortable rubbing under their legs.
Thankfully, getting the perfect fit is incredibly easy. All you need is a soft measuring tape (or a piece of string and a ruler) and some tasty treats to keep your dog still.
Here is how to measure your dog in three simple steps.
Step 1: Measure the Chest (The Most Important Part)
The chest measurement—often called the girth—is the most crucial number for picking the right harness size. This is where most of the harness's structure sits.
-
Where to measure: Place the measuring tape around the widest part of your dog’s ribcage. This is usually right behind their front legs.
-
How to do it: Keep the tape flat against their fur, but don't pull it tightly around them.
The Golden Rule: Keep your dog standing while you measure. If they are sitting or laying down, their ribcage shifts and you won't get an accurate reading.
Step 2: Measure the Base of the Neck
Next, you need to find out where the front straps of the harness will sit.
-
Where to measure: Wrap the tape around the lower part of their neck, right where it meets the shoulders. This is lower down than where a standard collar usually sits.
-
Why it matters: A harness should always rest on the sturdy chest bone, not high up on the throat where it could cut off their air or cause coughing when they pull.
Step 3: Weigh Your Dog (And Compare)
While measurements are the best way to get a great fit, knowing your dog's weight is an excellent way to double-check your work. Most sizing charts will include a weight range alongside the inch or centimeter measurements.
-
Hop on your bathroom scale while holding your pup, then weigh yourself without them, and subtract the difference.
The "Two-Finger" Final Check
Once your new harness arrives and you put it on your dog, use the Two-Finger Rule to ensure it is adjusted perfectly:
-
Slide two fingers under the straps at the neck and chest.
-
If your fingers slide under comfortably, the fit is great!
-
If it feels too tight to squeeze your fingers in, loosen the straps slightly. If there is a big gap, tighten them up so your dog can't back out of the harness.
